UAS Toolbox

Drone weather radar and aviation weather in one view

UAS Toolbox combines an animated precipitation map with aviation weather metrics and drone-specific warnings for the selected flight location.

Open flight weather

The weather view shows the previous hour of precipitation and up to four hours of nowcast where data is available. It combines radar with wind, gusts, visibility, cloud base, icing, temperature, Kp index, daylight and nearby METAR/TAF so a remote pilot can assess changing conditions without switching between several tools.

What the feature does

Animated precipitation timeline

Step through observed and forecast frames, inspect rain or snow intensity and see when precipitation is expected to start, ease or continue.

Pilot-focused weather metrics

Wind, gusts, visibility, cloud base, temperature, icing risk, daylight, moon data and geomagnetic conditions are presented for flight planning.

Local and global data coverage

The app selects dedicated NOAA or DWD radar layers in supported regions and uses a global precipitation service elsewhere, with forecast fallback data.

Operational warnings

Thunder risk, strong gusts, low visibility, icing and other conditions are surfaced as decision support instead of raw meteorological numbers alone.

How it is used

  1. Choose the flight location

Use device position or search for the planned operating area.

  2. Review the changing weather

Play the radar timeline and compare precipitation with wind, visibility and cloud base.

  3. Verify before launch

Use the assessment as planning support and confirm critical conditions with official aviation weather sources.

Limitations and sources

  • Radar and forecast coverage, resolution and update time vary by provider and location.
  • Weather data is decision support and does not replace an official aviation weather briefing.
  • A dry radar pixel does not guarantee suitable conditions at the exact flight altitude or site.

Frequently asked questions

Does the radar cover the whole world?

The precipitation service provides broad global coverage, while dedicated national radar layers are used in supported regions. Resolution and forecast availability vary by provider and location.

What weather information is shown for drone pilots?

The view includes precipitation, wind, gusts, visibility, cloud base, temperature, icing risk, daylight, Kp index and, when available, nearby METAR and TAF.

Can the weather view replace an official briefing?

No. UAS Toolbox is a planning aid. Pilots must verify time-critical weather and aviation information with the relevant official source before flight.
